Pastor Stephen Grant?

Stephen Grant is the pastor at St. Mary’s Lutheran Church on eastern Long Island. Grant is one of the more unique second-career clergy around, as he once worked for the CIA. Besides theology, his interests include archery, golf, writing, classic films, the beach, poker, baseball, and history. Grant also knows his wines, champagnes and brews. Oh yes, he generally dislikes politicians, and happens to be an expert marksman with a handgun and a rifle, while being pretty handy with a combat knife as well.

A Pastor and Firearms? Yes

From a 5-star review of Warrior Monk: A Pastor Stephen Grant Novel by Ray Keating:

"All of my friends have been urging me to read this book. I finally listened to them. This book is a great read! I'm surprised at how familiar the author is both with the mind of a Lutheran pastor and with firearms! Quite an interesting combination."

Well-Written Novel Goes Deeper Than Most

From a 5-star Amazon review of The River: A Pastor Stephen Grant Novel by Ray Keating:

"The things I've come to love about Pastor Stephen Grant novels are all here - friendly jokes amidst the characters, smooth integration of theology into the lives of the characters, and a thrilling plot! Definitely worth the wait since 'An Advent for Religious Liberty', and a super read for anyone interested in a well-written novel that goes deeper than most."

Thought Provoking and Fast Paced

A clergy member gives big thumbs up to An Advent for Religious Liberty: A Pastor Stephen Grant Novel by Ray Keating in Amazon review:

"The third book in the Pr. Grant series did not disappoint. Although shorter in length than the other books, it still delivered a thought-provoking, fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat story with interesting twists and a heart-warming ending. This book is timely considering all the things happening in our country these days and enables one to consider once again the role of faith in the public square. I would recommend this book, as well as the other two, and I look forward to what is in store next for Pr. Grant and the fine cast of characters that support him both in the church and in his other "endeavors." Keep up the good work, Mr. Keating!"

Pastor Loves "Root of All Evil?"

A 4-star Amazon review of Root of All Evil? A Pastor Stephen Grant Novel by Ray Keating:

"I am very inclined to like this book as I am a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastor just like the main character - without the CIA background. At the same time I would be very disappointed if Stephen Grant was not believable as a pastor. Fear not; he passes the smell test with flying colors. Grant would rather give pastoral care to those who are hurting, and it is only with the greatest reluctance that he must return to his CIA training and hurt people. This makes for a very interesting twist on the typical suspense thriller. You don't have to be a pastor - or even a Lutheran - to enjoy this book. It is an entertaining, easy read. It also provides a bit of insight into some of the theological issues and conflicts in American Christianity today, but manages to do so within the flow of the novel, and without getting heavy-handed."

Fall Reading List: Add Pastor Stephen Grant

Next U.S. President a Stephen Grant Fan?

Could the next U.S. president be a fan of Ray Keating’s PASTOR STEPHEN GRANT NOVELS? U.S. Rep. Peter King seems to be testing the waters as a voice for national security and fighting terrorists.

Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that King likes Stephen Grant. King said, “CIA intrigue, the Vatican, international terrorism and brutal assassinations make WARRIOR MONK a fast-moving, riveting read right out of today’s – and tomorrow’s – headlines. Add challenging religious issues, which the author makes us confront, and you have a brilliant novel. Ray Keating knows what he is writing about and writes it extraordinarily well.”

Conservatives Love Stephen Grant

Are you a conservative looking for engaging and exciting storytelling, but tired of having your views and values bashed in popular culture? Then Ray Keating’s Pastor Stephen Grant novels – WARRIOR MONK, ROOT OF ALL EVIL?, AN ADVENT FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY, and THE RIVER – are for you.

Take it from David Keene, who is the editorial page editor at The Washington Times, and the former president of the American Conservative Union and the NRA: “Thriller and mystery writers have concocted all manner of main characters … but none has come up with anyone like Stephen Grant, the former Navy Seal and CIA assassin, and current Lutheran pastor. Grant mixes battling America's enemies and sparring with enemies of traditional Christian values, while ministering to his Long Island flock. The amazing thing is that the character works. The Stephen Grant novels are great reads beginning with ‘Warrior Monk,’ which aptly describes Ray Keating's engaging hero.”
